5.4 Chemicals

Air Liquide supplies Chemicals (Methane, Ethane, Ethylene, Propane, Propylene, Ammonia.etc) in various packaging ranging from 10 L cylinders to 110 L drum and bundle / pallets. The Chemicals are also available in a few grades for different applications with our well-established supply chain and sources.

Ammonia (NH3)

Ammonia has its application in various industrial fields such as chemical, petroleum, wood and metal. It is one of the oldest refrigerant gases used in industries such as ice- making, freeze-drying and process-cooling.

Other examples of applications are:

  • Fertilization of soil.
  • Additive to prevent coagulation of raw latex during storage in rubber industries.
  • Cleaning agent.

Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6)

In semiconductor and display manufacturing, Sulfur Hexafluoride provides a Fluorine source for high-density plasma-etching without generating carbon by-products. Sulfur Hexafluoride can be used for etching Metal Silicides, Nitrides and Oxides versus their metal substrates. It is also used in display fabrication for the cleaning of the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) reactors. AL is able to provide alternatives for SF6 replacement to reduce greenhouse gases.

Sulfur Hexafluoride is also used as a dielectric (insulating material) in electrical transformers.

Fumigas

Our Fumigas products consist of the Ethylene Oxide (ETO) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) mixtures for the fumigation and sterilisation process of packaging and food products.

Methane (CH4)

A major constituent of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Methane is a fuel gas used in various industries where it offers clean burning. Higher-purity Methane is used in the production of carbon black, a material used in electronic components.

Methane is also used in the testing of gas appliances in natural gas areas.

Propane (C3H8)

As a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Propane is used as a fuel gas in industries where cleaner combustion is preferred to fossil fuels.

Other applications include metal melting in the metal work industries, refrigerant use for several industries and thermo bulb fill for temperature and pressure control instruments.

Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)

Sulfur Dioxide is used as an additive to etch gas mixtures in electronic industries or a preservative for beer, wine and meats in food and beverage industries. It can also be used as a refrigerant, or sterilization as well.

Silane SiH4

Silane is used in semiconductor manufacturing for polysilicon and epitaxial silicon deposition, as well as the silicon source for SiO2, Si3N4, by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). For display fabrication, Silane is mainly used for the Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD) of Si3N4 and polysilicon films. Silane is used in crystalline silicon photovoltaic cell manufacturing for the deposition of a silicon nitride antireflective layer. Silane is an intermediate in the production of high purity silicon used in photovoltaic cells and semiconductors.

Propylene

Propylene is a building-block chemical base for more complex chemicals. Chemicals created from propylene include propylene oxide, acrylonitrile, cumene and acrylic acid. These chemicals are used in a variety of products such as films, fibres, containers, packaging, and caps and closures. It is also used in the petrochemical industry, where it serves as a raw material during production.

Hydrogen Sulphide H2S

- Hydrogen sulphide provides a sulphur source for copper indium gallium film to adjust the light absorption bandgap in chalcogenide thin-film photovoltaics.

- In Laboratories & Research Centers, Hydrogen sulphide is used in calibrating gas mixtures for the petrochemical industry, environmental emissions monitoring, industrial hygiene monitors and trace impurity analysers, especially in Hydrogen quality control.

- In Pharma and Biotech, Hydrogen sulphide is a reactant in certain chemical processes.
